Club Championship competition played at West Berks GC

The club society Championship was played on Thursday 21st July at West Berks Golf Club. The weather was dry and near perfect for golf and twenty seven members played in the event. The course was in reasonable condition but most, if not all, tee boxes were in poor condition.
A keenly fought game was eventually won by Gerald Whell winning, on count back, with 37pts and Simon Cooper coming second also with 37pts and third placed was Ian Knight, on count back, with 36pts however, Simon Cooper had the consolation of picking up both nearest the pin prizes.

Golf Tour to King’s Lynn
13TH,14TH,15TH JUNE 2016

The annual golf tour of the Comrades Club took place over 3 days this week on 13th, 14th & 15th June 2016. The weather on all 3 days was very good considering weather of biblical proportions was forecast for each day and we escaped with a drenching for the last group won their last hole on day two.
On Monday we played at a very nice and well set out course, ideal for seniors in particular at Tydd St Giles GC. The format was in 3 balls with one to score on odd numbered holes and two to score on the even holes. The winners with an excellent score of 72 were:
Tony Holder, Ian Knight & Simon Claridge.
On Tuesday we played at Middleton Hall GC for a new trophy, The Memorial Cup. This trophy is dedicated to past members who sadly are no longer with us but have all served the society in one official capacity or another. In 2015 we lost our well respected and dear secretary Bill West and over the Xmas and New Year period just gone we lost Bob Elliott who served not only the golf society but also the Comrades Club at Wallingford for many years. Their names are engraved on the cup and others will be added at moments of reflection in the future. The course was good and set on a rare hill in Norfolk very close to King’s Lynn. The format, again, was in 3 balls but we played Texas Scramble.

The winners were:Chris Plumb, Paul Shackell & Peter Hobbs as picture below with the Memorial Cup.

Memorial Cup

On Wednesday we played, undoubtedly, the best course at Wellingborough GC. The course was very undulating, in really good condition everywhere with 1st class greens but extremely testing for even our best golfers. The format was once again 3 balls and we played individual stableford for the Tony Holder Trophy and the winner, with a modest score but the best one, was:
1st Steve Puddifoot 35 points (seen in photo on left with trophy presented by our Captain Adrian Hatt on right)
2nd Roger Ackerman 34 points
3rd Chris Plumb 31 points.

Many many thanks must go to Gerald Whell who year after year does all the booking of hotel and golf courses and once again served us with an excellent 3 days of golf. Thank you Gerald!

Take on the THUGS at The Springs
5th May 2016

On the hottest day of the year so far, seven pairs representing The Comrades took on the might of The Thugs at The Springs. They took the ascendancy before a ball was struck by turning up in smart blue team strip, whilst we were described as the rabble, and a couple of photos were taken to prove the point.
However four hours later, after some very impressive match play on the part of our team, we triumphed 5.5 to their 1.5.
There were a few highlights to mention.
Their one victory was largely down to a remarkable gross return of six under par by Dan Walker, playing off plus four, I believe!
As Captain, I was privileged to play with Ian Knight (Sir Ian, playing off 8) against their Captain Gary Walker (playing off 4)and his partner (playing off 18). Ian and Gary went head to head, each returning a remarkable gross two over par, and each agreeing that the competition had sparked off their best individual rounds for some time. Holes were mostly won by birdies on both sides, and in the end the pressure of having to give away so many strokes told on Gary, and we eventually pulled away to win 3&2. The match finished on the 16th green when (the icing on the cake) Ian’s tee shot also won the ‘nearest the pin’ prize, which fittingly was a bottle of brandy donated by Gary!
As with all the matches, it was played in great spirit, so much so that I am confident that the father/son combo may well be joining our ranks, which should sharpen both competition and banter for the future.
An excellent afternoon’s golf was rounded off by a magnificent roast dinner served up by our master chef Jamie.
If I have anything to do with it, this fixture will be a firm and regular annual favourite.
Well played everybody!

April event Spring Challenge Trophy played at Drayton Park GC
28th April 2016
On Thursday 28th April, 20 players turned up at Drayton Park Golf Club to play for the
Spring Trophy Challenge. The weather was fair if slightly windy and the course was found
to be in excellent condition and certainly the best we’ve played this year, so far.

The scores were strangely low but this may have been due to the unpredictability of the
wind.
The winner on 36pts was Gary Kent followed by last year’s winner Gerald Whell on 33pts
and Gavin Twigg coming in third with 31pts.
Nearest the pin in one on the 4th was Neil Tolley and Gary Kent was nearest in two on the
16th.

The secretary was absent from the prize giving in the evening and Gary Kent, as vice
captain, stood in for Adrian Hatt, our captain to make the speech and present prizes, one
was to himself.

Next month on Thursday 19th May we are playing at Downshire GC at Bracknell. This
fixture has become a good value event for us as the cost, for the golf and breakfast for
seniors is £18.50 and £26.50 for non-seniors and this combined with a good well
established course makes it really worthwhile attending. The list for entry is pinned to the
notice board in the club bar and on the society website: http://www.societygolfing.co.uk/
where entrants can also register their interest. Please note that for this event the final date
for entrants is Thursday 12th May. This is because Downshire require accurate numbers
for catering at least 1 week before the event.

March event played at Weston Turville GC
24th March 2016

Last Thursday we played our March event at, a new club for us, Weston Turville

The turnout was slightly down on our usual numbers with 21 taking part in what turned out to be played as teams of 3. So, 7 teams of 3 teed off at 11am with the scoring format being:
On odd numbered holes, 1 player would score and on even numbered holes, 2 players would score.

The weather was not too good. The course was greeted warmly by most players and although the course was a little short it was ideal for most of our members being seniors. Its condition was good with fairways in good condition but greens a little slow and one disappointment was that we had to tee off mats on each hole however, most members felt it was certainly worth a return visit next year but maybe a little later in the year.
I’m sorry, but I forgot to take a photo of the winning team, I’m sure I deserve a slap for that, but here are the results:

1st Ian Knight
Gerald Whell 67pts
Anthony Scott

2nd Neil Tolley
Gavin Twigg 65pts
Tony Taylor

3rd Gary Kent
Trevor Denning 63pts
Lawrie Rutter

4th Peter Smith
Tony Holder 61pts
Geoff Walker

5th Rob Keyse
Simon Claridge 59pts
Adrian Hatt

6th Bob Larter
Maurice Digby 58pts
Norman Dobson

7th Colin Croxford
Jon Pebworth 54pts
Tony Harding

Nearest the pin hole 9: Gerald Whell
Nearest the pin hole 14: Gerald Whell

Next month we are at Drayton Park on 28th April tee off 11am. Please enter via society website or list on club notice board before cut off at lunchtime (1pm) Monday 25th April. There is also a match versus “THUGS” on Friday 6th May tee off 2pm. Enter the same way as for Drayton Park.
