Shrewsbury and Stratford were the locations for this years Tour and again it was put together professionally by Gerald Whell.
21 players, 3 different rainy courses.
Day 1: Shrewsbury Golf Club:
A very nice course and we were made very welcome, good hospitality and good food. The course played long due to the very heavy rain storms and lightning speed greens, but we got through.
The 1st day was a team event (3 ball) and this was won by – Ian Cooke, Ian Gordon, Chris Plumb
Day 2: Should of been Shifnal Golf Club, but this was closed due to flooding, after numerous phone calls to other courses, who were all closed due to flooding, we eventually found a course to play, Bridgnorth Golf Club, but this was to be a bizarre day, because of the weather 5 of the players decided to give it a miss and stayed dry at the Hotel, 16 ventured south bound and as the forecast showed it rained from start to finish, 6 players dropped out half way around, leaving 9 to fly the flag for the tour, 2 x 3 ball decided to join forces and went round in a 6 ball, the 18 holes eventually came to an end and despite leaving his wet weather clothing in the Hotel and playing 18 holes of golf like a drowned rat the individual stableford winner on the day was – Chris Plumb (no picture).
Day 3: Stratford Oaks Golf Club – Because of the weather on the last 2 days, there were a lot of changes and day 3’s game became an Individual Stableford match, we were now down to 20 players, so 5 x 4 balls and on this day we were playing for the prestigious Tony Holder Trophy.
We stayed DRY, the heavens didn’t open (what a relief), we were beginning to get webbed feet, the course was fairly new and was in a good condition, tricky in places, dog legs, long grass and a few ponds, but as it was DRY, the game was played better and the scores reflected this and with a brilliant 40 points the winner was – Gary Kent (pictured here on the right).
